THE STORY BEHIND WASTE MANAGEMENT AND INTERNATIONAL AWARDS

Waste management remains a major challenge in many large cities, including Jakarta. According to the Jakarta Department of Environmental Affairs (2022), the city generates around 8,369 tons of waste every day. The largest share comes from residential areas at 60.5%, followed by business activities at 28.7%. Meanwhile, the current waste reduction rate has only reached 24%, still below the 30% target set for 2025, highlighting the need for more effective and sustainable waste management practices.

In response to this challenge, Arkadia Works began by improving how operational waste is managed within the company. Through a more responsible approach, 99% of operational waste, equivalent to 44.08 tons, has been reused and recycled, preventing it from becoming an additional burden on temporary waste collection sites.

From this effort, the Artwork From Waste initiative was born. This creative approach transforms leftover materials into decorative interior elements with both aesthetic and functional value. Through this idea, waste is no longer seen as the end of a material’s lifecycle, but as the beginning of a new creative process in office interior design.

This initiative is supported by consistent waste management practices within the workplace. Arkadia Works separates waste from the source, including the proper handling of hazardous waste (B3) to protect both the environment and human health. Organic waste is processed into compost to support soil fertility, while inorganic waste is managed in collaboration with Jagatera through sorting, recycling, and material recovery.

Through these efforts, waste management has become part of Arkadia Works’ daily operational practices. The goal is not only to reduce waste generation but also to extend the lifecycle of materials and encourage more responsible resource management.

This approach has led to the creation of interior works that are not only sustainable but also recognized globally. Several projects that incorporate Artwork From Waste elements have received international recognition, including the Asia Pacific Property Awards and the Outstanding Property Award London.

Through this journey, Arkadia Works demonstrates that innovation in waste management can become an integral part of impactful office interior design. By transforming waste into meaningful design elements, sustainability can be embedded into the built environment while creating spaces that are both functional and inspiring.
